Badacey Poker: The Badugi + A-5 Draw Hybrid Explained

October 2026 · 6 min read

Badacey is a split-pot draw game that combines Badugi and A-5 Triple Draw in a single hand. One half of the pot goes to the best Badugi hand (four-card rainbow low), and the other half goes to the best A-5 lowball hand using five cards. It's one of the more creative mixed-game variants in the modern poker world and a feature event in the PSOP on Phenom Poker.

How Badacey Works

Each player is dealt five cards (not four — unlike pure Badugi). There are three drawing rounds with fixed-limit betting after each, just like A-5 Triple Draw. At showdown:

  • Badugi half: The best four-card badugi hand using any four of your five cards wins this half. Suits and ranks must all differ; lowest hand wins. A-2-3-4 rainbow is the nut badugi.
  • A-5 Lowball half: The best five-card A-5 lowball hand wins this half. Ace is low, straights and flushes don't count. A-2-3-4-5 (wheel) is the nut hand.

The five cards you're dealt serve double duty — you're using all five for the A-5 half and any four of the five for the Badugi half. This creates interesting drawing decisions since you're optimizing for two different hand types simultaneously.

Badacey Strategy

Target Hands That Can Scoop

The most powerful position in Badacey is holding a hand that can scoop both halves. The nuts would be something like A-2-3-4-5 in four different suits — you have the wheel for A-5 (A-2-3-4-5) AND a badugi (A-2-3-4 in four different suits). These hands are rare but worth drawing aggressively toward early.

Starting Hand Selection

Ideal starting hands have four or five low cards with high suit diversity. A hand like A♠-2♥-3♦-4♣-5♥ gives you the nut A-5 but fails the badugi (two hearts), so one draw could fix it. Four low cards of distinct suits with a fifth as potential backup is a dream starting hand.

Drawing Priority

If you have a strong five-card A-5 hand but weak badugi (suit duplicates), consider whether drawing could improve the badugi without wrecking the A-5 hand. If you have a strong badugi but a weak A-5 hand (high cards or pairs), draw to improve the A-5 component first — a four-card badugi paired with a 9-low A-5 will likely lose the A-5 half.

Don't Chase Weak Halves

In split-pot games, getting quartered is a disaster. If you're confident you'll win only one half and your opponent is clearly strong in both, folding is often correct in fixed-limit Badacey — you'd need the pot to be overlaid enough to justify earning just half the pot on each call.

Where to Play Badacey Online

Badacey is rarely spread on mainstream poker sites. Phenom Poker is one of the few platforms offering Badacey as both a cash game and tournament event through the PSOP. The mixed-game community on Phenom is active and growing, making it the top destination for draw game variants.
